January 2, 2025 by Tom Whittemore
How long does it take to sail around the world

If you’re a sailor like me, you might find yourself dreaming of a life exploring the world by sea. Sometimes I find myself asking, “How long does it take to sail around the world?”

This question stirs the imagination and evokes images of adventurous journeys on the high seas. Let’s dive into the details of this fantastic voyage.

How Long It Takes to Sail Around the World

The time it takes to sail around the world can vary significantly based on several factors, including:

  • The type of boat

  • The route taken

  • Weather conditions

  • The sailor’s experience.

Typically, for a trip around the world, it can take anywhere from 6 months to a few years. A fast-paced trip with minimal stops can be shorter. But part of the joy of sailing around the world is the journey itself, not just the destination.

What is the World Record for Sailing the Fastest Around the World

You might be surprised by how quickly someone can sail around the world. For a crewed vessel, the record is 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds. For a solo trip, the record is 42 days, 16 hours, 40 minutes and 35 seconds.

Is It Illegal to Sail Around the World?

Sailing around the world is perfectly legal! However, it does require careful planning and adherence to international laws and regulations. Sailors need to be aware of and respect the maritime laws of each country they pass through or stop in. You will definitely need your passport, and possibly permits depending on where you go.

Tips for Sailing Around the World

  • Plan Your Route Carefully: Take into account seasonal weather patterns and ocean currents.

  • Ensure Your Vessel is Seaworthy: Have your boat thoroughly checked and equipped for long voyages.

  • Learn Navigation Skills: Modern technology is essential, but traditional navigation skills are invaluable.

  • Prepare for Emergencies: Have a well-stocked first aid kit and know basic medical procedures.

  • Stay Legally Compliant: Understand and adhere to the maritime laws of the countries you visit.

  • Embrace the Experience: Remember, it’s about the journey, not just the destination.

Conclusion

Sailing around the world is a dream for many and a reality for a few brave and adventurous souls. It’s a journey that tests your skills, endurance, and spirit. Whether you’re setting a world record or taking your time to explore, it’s an unforgettable experience.
