Cruise faq

Booking a cruise vacation is one of the most exciting things. Thinking about the shore excursions, different ports of call, onboard entertainment, etc is enough to make anyone giddy! As a sailing and surfing instructor, going on cruises is (in my opinion) the best form of travel.

However, if you haven’t gone on a cruise before, you might have a lot of questions. So today, I am here to answer them with these top 5 cruise FAQs! Let’s dive in:

Cruise Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ #1: Do you need a passport to go on a cruise?

Whether or not you need a passport for a cruise really depends on your itinerary and what type of cruise it is. Use this guide:

  • Closed-loop cruises: These cruises start and end in the same port. In this case, a state-issued ID and birth certificate might be fine. Always check with the cruise line.
  • Cruises with stops in foreign countries: For these, you will need to bring your passport with you. It is essential for re-entry into your home country once your cruise ends or you need to fly home in an emergency.

FAQ #2: How much does a cruise cost?

Cruise costs vary wildly depending on the cruise line, destination, duration, time of year, type of cabin, package, etc. Prices range from $50 to $500+ per person per day. This typically includes things like accommodation, dining and drinks, and entertainment. You may incur additional costs for shore excursions, specialty dining, spa services, gratuities, and more.

FAQ #3: What should I pack for a cruise?

To pack for a cruise, bring a mix of casual wear, some formal attire, and practical items to make your time at sea more comfortable. This will depend on your destination, but you may bring things like:

  • swimwear
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • formal wear for dinner nights
  • a light jacket for breezy evenings
  • sunscreen
  • prescription medication
  • a power strip, as outlets can be limited
  • don’t forget your travel documents!

FAQ #4: How fast do cruise ships go?

Cruise ships typically travel at a speed of about 20-25 knots (23-29 mph or 37-46 km/h). Ships tend to go at this speed to balance fuel efficiency with a timely arrival. Speed varies depending on weather conditions and the distance between ports.

FAQ #5: What do I wear on a cruise?

Check with your cruise line for specific dress codes, but typically, you can break it down like this:

Daytime attire: This is your casual wear. Think short, t-shirts, swimwear, and comfy shoes.

Evening attire: In the evenings, you may want to dress up a little bit with dresses, trousers, and collared shirts.

Formal attire: Many cruises often have at least one formal night, so pack a cocktail dress, suit, or tuxedo.
